Roofing Calculator

Flat / Low-Slope Roof Calculator

Flat and low-slope roofs (under 2:12 pitch) use membrane systems — EPDM, TPO, or modified bitumen — instead of asphalt shingles. The calculation is simpler than pitched roofing but requires different materials. Enter your roof dimensions to get square footage, rolls, and coverage estimates.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter your roof's length and width — measure the outer footprint of the building, not the slope length.
  2. Select your roof pitch (rise:12). If unsure, see the pitch reference table below or count the rise in inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run.
  3. Choose your shingle type and adjust the waste factor (add more for complex rooflines).
  4. Read your squares, bundles, and underlayment rolls from the result panel — use these numbers to get supplier quotes.

How we calculate this

Flat roof area = length × width × pitch multiplier (very close to 1.0 for low-slope roofs). EPDM and TPO rolls typically cover 100 sq ft each (10 × 10 ft sheets) or come in custom widths (10 ft, 15 ft, 20 ft). Gravel ballast requires approximately 10 lbs per sq ft. A 10% waste factor covers seams, edge details, and penetration flashing.

Pitch multiplier √(1 + (rise ÷ 12)²)
Roof area footprint × pitch multiplier
Squares roof area ÷ 100
Bundles (incl. waste) squares × (1 + waste%) × bundles per square

Pitch multiplier reference

The pitch multiplier converts your flat footprint to actual sloped roof area. A steeper roof means more material.

What this calculator doesn't include

This calculator estimates membrane quantity only. Flat roof systems also require: insulation board (rigid polyiso or EPS), edge metal termination, drain scuppers or interior drains, and adhesive/primer. Costs vary significantly based on the membrane type chosen and whether it is mechanically fastened, adhered, or ballasted.
