Lumber Calculators

Free lumber calculators for board feet, wall framing, and deck lumber. Enter your dimensions to get board counts, total board footage, and a cost estimate — instantly.

About these lumber calculators

All calculators use nominal lumber dimensions (the size you ask for, e.g. 2×4) with the industry-standard board feet formula: (thickness × width × length) ÷ 12. Results include a 10% waste factor by default and a cost estimate at ~$0.85/BF that you can adjust in each calculator. Always confirm pricing with your local lumber yard before ordering.

When to use each lumber calculator

Use Board Feet for takeoffs and pricing, Framing for studs and plates in wall assemblies, and Deck for joists, beams, and decking counts. Choosing the right calculator first prevents over-ordering and keeps your estimate aligned to project type.

Lumber planning tips

Separate structural members from finish material in your estimate and review local span requirements before purchasing. For framing and decks, verify grade and species with your supplier so pricing and load expectations match your build.
